As the player progresses, it soon becomes clear this is not enough, and that triggers the third aspect of the gameplay, which is evolution. These are now the only means of attack against the virus. The player is given access to the combat programs, simple tools that originally began as mini-games. Sepulveda enlists the player, a curious hacker who stumbled across Darwinia by accident, to aid him in rescuing the Darwinians and drive off the computer virus. Darwinia has been infected by a computer virus, and Sepulveda is in near panic, watching decades of research being corrupted and being used up. However, the player arrives in the midst of an emergency. A Darwinian lives a life working and growing, until the eventual death of the Darwinian, which releases their digital soul to later be reincarnated. Darwinia is also where the world can visit to see them frolicking in their natural, fractal habitat. Housed in a massive network of surplus Protologic 68000 machines from the 1980s, Darwinia is a world where the single-poly Darwinians, with their simple, but growing AI, can grow and evolve.

Here's the list of games that came out in 2008 thanks to Wikipedia: DO NOT reveal what you voted for in the comments until the countdown process has finished or they will be stricken from voting. Only votes through Private Messaging will count. Also no tied votes e.g you can't have two games in your number 1 spot. Once votes are made you can change them if you PM me in advance of the deadline date but thereafter they won't be considered. Only select 8 games which are 4 main entries and 4 Honorable Mentions unless you PM me and state that you want to enter in a shorter list of entries. No games will be accepted that have come out after or before 2008 and no shovelware games will be included as they are in abundance and aren't particularly where interests lie. No votes will be counted after July 7th unless several member of the community would like an extension or there are too few voters (about 25-30 minimum would be enough) If I fail to receive 5 more votes by the new closing date then I will cancel the vote-so please get them in by then. I require 5 more votes for this countdown to begin. I am granting an extension-so voting will remain open until Wednesday the 22nd of July. Those who want more time to vote should PM me to request more time-but otherwise send me your top 8s of 2008-of course being 4 main favourites and 4 honourable mentions. Currently I have received 16 votes and desirably there should be about 25-30 votes for this to work. I will open voting up for two weeks to see how many voters we get. I already know the game that I'd personally choose to top this list but the smattering of great games will make the other choices to make up my top 8 quite a challenge. This year was admittedly quite a lukewarm one, but there were still handful of fantastic games. I thought we'd get started right off the back of the best games of 2020 for us to vote for the best games of 2008.
